Why DNA Testing Matters
African Grey parrots are sexually monomorphic: males and females have identical plumage, body size, and beak structure. The only reliable way to determine sex before the bird is old enough to lay eggs — or exhibits sex-specific hormonal behavior — is laboratory DNA analysis.
A feather sample from each bird is submitted to a certified avian genetics lab and analyzed for sex chromosomes: ZZ indicates male, ZW indicates female. The process takes 3–5 business days and produces a certificate tied to that specific bird's sample.
Knowing your bird's sex matters for several reasons:
- Females may lay infertile (unfertilized) eggs after maturity — a completely normal behavior that requires dietary calcium supplementation and veterinary awareness
- Males tend to be slightly more prone to territorial behavior during breeding season, though individual personality varies widely
- Some owners have a preference for one sex; without a DNA certificate, you're guessing
