Why DNA Testing Matters

African Grey parrots are sexually monomorphic: males and females have identical plumage, body size, and beak structure. The only reliable way to determine sex before the bird is old enough to lay eggs — or exhibits sex-specific hormonal behavior — is laboratory DNA analysis.

A feather sample from each bird is submitted to a certified avian genetics lab and analyzed for sex chromosomes: ZZ indicates male, ZW indicates female. The process takes 3–5 business days and produces a certificate tied to that specific bird's sample.

Knowing your bird's sex matters for several reasons:

  • Females may lay infertile (unfertilized) eggs after maturity — a completely normal behavior that requires dietary calcium supplementation and veterinary awareness
  • Males tend to be slightly more prone to territorial behavior during breeding season, though individual personality varies widely
  • Some owners have a preference for one sex; without a DNA certificate, you're guessing

Compare male vs. female African Greys in detail to understand behavioral differences.

DNA Testing FAQs

Why does DNA testing matter when buying an African Grey?
African Grey parrots are monomorphic — males and females look identical. Without DNA sexing, breeders and buyers cannot confirm sex. DNA testing uses a blood or feather sample analyzed by an accredited avian genetics laboratory to identify sex chromosomes with 99.9% accuracy. Knowing your bird's sex matters for behavior expectations, naming, and future decisions about breeding.
Do all African Grey parrots for sale come DNA-sexed?
No — many budget breeders and pet store birds are sold unsexed or with unverified sex claims based on appearance or behavior alone. At CongoAfricanGreys.com, every bird receives a laboratory DNA sex test before placement and the certificate is provided to the buyer at no additional charge.
What health screenings come with your DNA-tested African Greys?
Each bird receives an avian veterinarian wellness exam, DNA sex test from an accredited genetics lab, and a health certificate. Birds are assessed for Psittacosis exposure risk, nutritional status, feather and eye quality, weight-for-age, and beak and claw condition. A written health guarantee is provided with every placement.
